This was the opening day of The Royal Academy Summer Show.
The sculpture courtyard was occupied by several steel sculptures by the Chapman Brothers. See this for example
The Summer show was again predictably predictable. Occasional gems were out-crowded by the uninspired.
At least the RA has now shaken off the impulse to include portraits of the Royal Family, who have been supplanted by the naked Blairs in one of the few inspired anti-war gems of the show.
The "I-could-do-that," moment was provided by Mrs Monk’s reaction to the grand landscape centre-piece by David Hockney
I gave Mrs Monk the usual retort, "Yes, you could have done that, but you didn't".
After lunch we made our way out through the courtyard and Mrs Monk reappraised the new plate steel sculptures by Jake and Dinos Chapman.
Two young men and their girlfriends chatted among the sculpture and Mrs Monk made sure that they heard her opinion of the work.
“This is not steel,” she said, “This is MDF".
I watched the two young men look over their shoulders at Mrs Monk
We made our way out of the courtyard and when we were at a safe distance, I told her that she had just given her opinion to the Chapman Brothers.
