Dali Museum

St. Petersburg, Florida 14 March 2011

I cannot be too sniffy about the Dali Museum in St Petersburg because it gives so much pleasure to coach loads of tourists, but so does Ripley’s Believe It Or Not, where you can find similar artefacts that are not pretending to be high art. Dali famously signed multiple tacky reproductions of his work, Gilbert and George also do this on a grand scale, and may well be following in Dali’s footsteps in more ways than this. (They also promote their wares with a weird persona, and are happy to crossover and seek a popular following for a little extra mullah.)

We checked out the gallery having escaped a thunderstorm that brought a cold wind and wet rain,

We had no intention of paying the 40 dollars to join the coach party procession around the gallery but we did buy two espressos from a young man who worked there but also had never felt moved to check out the Dalis

The day was rounded off with a visit to the mall, somewhere else to avoid if at all possible.
