Canova’s “The Three Graces” took pride of place in the 2008, Tate Britain show, Return Of The Gods: Neo-classical Sculpture, and was highly recommended by these pages.
I decided to commemorate the show by painting a canvas in oil and charting the progress of the painting on this web site. The canvas is 50 x 40 cms.
Progress has been slow, but currently re-inspired by Mrs Monk’s current project to submit an entry this year for the Royal Academy Summer show.
The last time she did this she created considerable chaos chasing the deadline, but had some success, since her entry was “short-listed”
This huge painting was not sold and still hangs in our bedroom and as you can see, it features just the two “Graces,” a fierce cat and three man muses.
She made this painting in the 80s while I was out at work, and when I returned home I had the job of framing the picture and completing the RA application. We call this picture “Polly called, but you were out”, because Mrs Monk misheard my question, and gave this answer when I asked her what she wanted to call it.
She has learned that one of the judges for this year’s entry will be Allen Jones, who paints woman in fetish wear and extremely high heels, and Mrs. Monk is therefore planning to prepare a painting on this subject, hoping to appeal to his taste without exposing herself to the charge of plagiarism.
She spent this Friday morning preparing these drawings, in oil paint. I begged her not to use oil paint because of the problematic drying time, particularly with her painting style involved great thick daubs of paint. When I got home from Friday tennis I found these sketches laid out on the living room floor where Cat Flap Charlie had apparently joined in, because a trail of cat paw prints were left about the house particularly on the window sill and other known Charlie stalking trails.
Anyway, the photographers have now become painters, and this movie is about this new switch and The Three Graces are now back on course. See the movie for a progress report, if you please.
At the end of this process the painting will be delivered to the successful bidder in an auction for the benefit of this web site.
