Having committed myself to the cause of the “Grey Rise To Power”, I found the agenda has again been hijacked by Britain's disaffected youth, who last week made sure that every news agency and politician were considering just how disaffected they were, and not how disaffected I am.
No one likes to be ignored, and two weeks ago, before the riots kicked off, I wrote to the editor of The Guardian, offering him a scoop, “The Rise of Grey Power,” which resonates with this subject, offering more than can be published on these pages.
You’ve guessed it. Not a dickey bird of a response.
After the riots, Members of Parliament canceled their holidays in Tuscany and Californian theme parks and returned to Blighty because they urgently needed to demonstrate their concern about the riots to their voters. Accordingly they discussed what might be done to stop it happening again, and whether they should use the carrot or the stick, or how they should give our youth meaningful employment and a stake in society, or otherwise, whether they should take away their social benefits to make them, and their families, pay for what they did last week.
Nobody agrees about what should be done, but they are nevertheless thinking about the issue and my guess is that there will, in due course, be some fiscal adjustments made by the Chancellor to pay for what has happened, and when that happens it will mean yet another raid on pension funds, including ours. I am also quite sure that someone will get a bonus for making these fiscal adjustments.
The “Grey” population have a lot in common with the disaffected youth. Both are expected to work more, and for less cash, and for doing less than they are capable of doing. That may be for us over 60’s, stacking shelves in B and Q, or stacking shelves in Tescos and burger-flipping for the other powerless, if youthful minority.
Between the two is the power based generation that decides who gets what, and are careful to avoid disadvantaging themselves and their friends.
So, Rosie Boycott, what do we do about regaining the grey agenda?
We are right behind you.
