Before Andy Murray appeared at the Montreal Open, there was a long non-competitive interval since Wimbledon when he was on form, and now when he is not. We were told that he was working on a slower preparation for the US Open, not wanting to burn out too early in Montreal.
We should not be surprised that he lost in the first round to the hungry Kevin Anderson, 6-3, 6-1. Murray has chosen not to employ a coach who would have kicked his arse in Miami where he was clearly not working as hard as claimed in the Floridian humidity.
I also blame the newly short back and sides haircut that demonstrated his lost tennis focus.
Bring back the hirsute whiskers for Cincinnati next week and the real Andy Murray.
